bon soir tout le monde!
weekend report:
saturday night our program paid for us to attend a festival called "fete de l'humanitie" a communist music/politics/cultural festival. it was a cross between woodstock and a socialist country fair. we all trekked to the outskirts of the city with the director of our program named david (half french half british 30 year old who looks like wheres waldo and is extremely charming and loved by all twenty three girls on my program) in the lead. we followed crowds of dread locked, billowy pants wearing youth to the festival location.
for some reason security had closed all the entrance gates upon our arrival. i would say about three thousand angry hippies, including myself, all began to push forward against the entrance gate as security pushed back. it was actually quite scary - my feet were not touching the ground for a good fifteen minutes. after about an hour and a half of people screaming and crying and yelling curse words in french the crowd pushed down the gates and my face was no longer lodged in an old mans armpit.
after that fiasco the night was amazing. an american band called n.e.r.d. played we watched people blow fire and ate tons of fries (got some bewildered stares concerning the amount of ketchup used) and drank some good french beer.
the presence of the communist party here is actually quite interesting. left wing political groups are much more numerous and diverse than in the u.s. whereas we have our democratic and republican parties with a few in between, the french still have a HUGE array of left wing parties that are extremely active.
last night we went back to the festival but it was a little too crowded and cold so we left early and went to oberkampf near the bastille area. there are a lot of cute bars around there so we had a drink, after the waited messed up our order. then we got lost in la marais trying to find another bar where a friend from school was hanging out. after that we missed the last rer home and had to take a metro which brought us about ten blocks away from our dorm. the bright lightbulbs that we are we walked in the direction away from our dorm and then hopped onto the last tram further away from our dorm having to take a taxi home.
today a couple of us found a beautiful little flower, exotic bird and rodent market where we got to pet bunnies. that was followed by a lovely rasberry tart in the luxembourg gardens where i got sunburned.
that was my weekend! i miss everyone and send all my kisses and hugs out from my little dorm room here![]()
passe des bonnes reves! a bientot!

Gwen,
I can't believe you were floating in the crowd for 15 minutes under a smelly armpit. If I was there I wouldn't of sat you on my shoulders :-( and I would've taken the pit.
I love your writing. Keep it coming.
